Background of the Study
Spirituality, which encompasses beliefs, values, and practices that provide individuals with meaning and connection, has been increasingly recognized as a vital component of mental health recovery. For many patients, spirituality serves as a source of hope, resilience, and coping during their recovery journey (Eze & Chukwuemeka, 2024).
In Nigeria, cultural and religious beliefs are deeply intertwined with spirituality, influencing perceptions of mental illness and approaches to recovery. At the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State, understanding the role of spirituality in mental health recovery is essential for providing holistic care that aligns with patients’ values and beliefs.
This study evaluates how spirituality contributes to mental health recovery, exploring its integration into psychiatric care and its impact on patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
While the therapeutic potential of spirituality in mental health recovery is acknowledged, its role is often underexplored in clinical settings. At the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, there is limited understanding of how spirituality influences recovery outcomes for psychiatric patients.
The absence of structured approaches to incorporating spirituality into mental health care limits its potential benefits for patients. This study aims to assess the role of spirituality in mental health recovery, identifying ways to integrate spiritual support into treatment plans effectively.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of spirituality in coping and resilience among psychiatric patients at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.
2. To evaluate the impact of spirituality on mental health recovery outcomes.
3. To identify challenges in integrating spirituality into psychiatric care.
Research Questions
1. How does spirituality contribute to coping and resilience among psychiatric patients?
2. What is the impact of spirituality on mental health recovery outcomes?
3. What challenges exist in incorporating spirituality into psychiatric care?
Research Hypotheses

3. Challenges in integrating spirituality into psychiatric care limit its effectiveness.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on psychiatric patients and healthcare providers at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, between 2023 and 2025.
